It’s autumn and one of the most pleasant seasons of the year. The leaves are changing color, football season is in full swing, the mosquitoes are gone, and the temperature is cool enough for enjoyable walks through the woods. But enjoy it while it’s here — soon enough, the first snowflakes of the year will appear along with blistering cold and icy roads. Bedford Nissan advises that now is the time to prepare your Nissan vehicle for winter.

Taking a proactive approach with these five preventive maintenance tips will ensure that your Nissan vehicle is operating at top performance and is less likely to develop unexpected repairs when severe winter strikes.

    • Car battery: Winter’s cold weather can be harsh on batteries; check to ensure that the battery connection is clean, tight, and corrosion-free. If the battery is more than three years old, replace it.
    • Tires: Look closely at your tire pressure and tread depth for uneven wear as well as bulges and bald spots, as it might be time for a wheel alignment or new tires. Ask the professionals at our Nissan service department about special tires that perform well in Ohio’s harsh winters. As the temperature goes down, continue to check for low tire pressure.
    • Brakes: When driving on icy or snow-covered roads, drivers need to depend on brakes. During the fall, have the service department at Bedford Nissan check on the brake system including brake linings, rotors, and drums.
    • Wiper blades, air filters, heaters and defrosting system: Once the cold winds of winter arrive, Nissan drivers depend on a warm and comfortable cabin while driving. Check to ensure that the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system are working optimally to warm the interior and defrost windows. Don’t wait till wiper blades are torn or cracked; replace them in the fall and check the fluid level of your windshield wiper fluid.
    • Fall car care reminder: If you need help to remember when and what to do for your car this fall, take advantage of the Car Care Council’s free schedule and email reminder service at carecare.org or visit your trained technicians at Bedford Nissan.
