When you go to fill up your Nissan Maxima, Nissan Sentra, or other Nissan vehicle, you may have wondered if you are using the correct fuel type. Since many gas stations offer multiple types of gasoline, but no explanation regarding the differences, which can be an area of confusion for many drivers. At Bedford Nissan, we want to help alleviate this confusion, and answer your biggest questions related to available fuel types for your Nissan vehicle.
Regular, plus, and premium fuel
Nearly all major gas stations offer a choice of three primary fuel types: regular, plus, premium. At some gas stations, each level may have slightly different names. These fuel types are associated with specific numbers, which are known as octane ratings (87,89, and 91-93). The lower the octane rating, the less expensive the fuel. Most standard vehicles will perform well when using regular unleaded gas. However, if you are unsure of what gas type is ideal for your Nissan vehicle, where should you turn? The owner’s manual will always tell you the ideal octane rating to use when filling up. While it does not benefit the car and goes against the owner’s manual recommendations, mixing octane ratings is not likely to cause significant damage.
Diesel fuel
Diesel fuel should only be used on vehicles that specifically require this type of fuel–usually pickup trucks. When purchasing a new vehicle, you will often know right away if the vehicle will require diesel. Filling a vehicle that does not require diesel with this type of fuel can cause major damage to the vehicle, which is costly to fix. Thankfully, nearly all gas stations separate diesel fuel from regular, plus, and premium gasoline.
